Year of sex scandal headline heaven as Tiger led way in playing the fieldLIVES IN THE LIMELIGHT: Boyzone dancer Francine Cornell, left, who had a tryst with Ronan Keating, below left; and Jaimee Grubbs, above, who was linked to the Tiger Woods scandal Perhaps because the headlines this year were so relentlessly about economics and big international affairs, whenever there was a hint of a real human affair involving sex, we seized on it readily. The Tiger Woods sex scandal was the light relief we had all been waiting for. Running that a close second was the delicious Iris Robinson scandal that had rocked Northern Ireland in December of the previous year and had spilled merrily into early 2010. With his virulently Christian wife retreating from the public eye and her young lover receiving offers to pose for 'Playgirl' in the US, the province's First Minister, Peter Robinson, temporarily gave up the reins of the DUP to Arlene Foster. Meanwhile, international observers unanimously agreed that it was the most interesting thing ever to happen in the North.

That Tiger was such a squeaky clean corporate spokesman made it all the more perfect. His harem seemed to sell their story one at a time and we greedily ate up every word. Woods went to a clinic to clean up his act and for once golf became interesting. Tiger filled the void for a few months when John Terry and Wayne Rooney would begin to dominate news cycles with sex scandals of their own.

Terry was stripped of the England captainship when it emerged he had slept with the former partner of a team mate, while Rooney was forced to admit he had been with a prostitute. Luckily none of this got in the way of him staying at United, after a brief wobble in which it seemed he might leave. On a domestic level, the affair that consumed us was that of Ronan Keating. The Boyzone star had an tryst with a dancer and it appeared that his marriage to wife Yvonne might be over, before a last-minute summit seemed to save it.
