Met Éireann have warned that snow could be on the way this week as temperatures continue to drop.

"It's certainly getting very cold with temperatures falling more and more every day," Met Éireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly told Independent.ie.

"Over the next few days we will see heavy rain showers, with the risk of hail and sleet. There's also a chance of thunder on Thursday," she said.

Donnelly said snow will be more likely to occur in the north and north west of the country with mountainous areas likely to see some snow.

"Over the hills there will certainly be a chance of snow as the temperatures continue to drop," she said.

Wrap up warm as on Wednesday temperatures are expected to drop to between two to six degrees.

According to Met Éireann Thursday will start wet and windy with widespread showers, with the risk of hail or thundery downpours.

Temperatures are expected to fall to just four to eight degrees.

Friday will be the coldest with temperatures set to drop to below zero.

"It will be a cold and blustery weekend with some sunny intervals and a scattering of showers also," said Donnelly.
