WORK on a world-class pathology centre, which will play a key role in garda investigations into murders and suspicious deaths, officially got under way yesterday.
The state-of-the-art building is due to cost €14m and is expected to be completed by next August.
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said it would operate in tandem with a €40m state laboratory, which is being built on a site at Backweston in north Kildare.
The new facility in Marino on the northside of Dublin will be used jointly by the office of the State Pathologist and the Dublin city coroner's office.
Mr Ahern described yesterday as an important milestone in the development of a modern and hi-tech facility that would serve the operational needs of each office for many decades.
