It certainly proved a happy new year for four colleagues who landed a €250,000 Lotto jackpot in the Christmas millionaire raffle.

The workers, from Theo Benning at Wexford's Whitemill industrial estate, will get €62,500 each.

The €20 syndicate ticket was bought by Mary Roche, from Carrig-on-Bannow, Co Wexford, on behalf of herself and her colleagues Rita Cahill, Debbie Tierney and Ann Hayes.

Ms Roche said yesterday: "I checked the ticket and then I phoned the other girls straight away. We're all delighted."

Meanwhile, one of the five winning €100,000 tickets drawn in the same raffle was sold just a few miles away, at Geelan's service station at Cleariestown in Wexford.

Shop owner Tony Geelan said: "I'm hoping it's a local person."

Elsewhere, a man from south Dublin landed a cool €1,024,726 in the Euromillions draw last Friday and a young couple in the capital won €1m in the Christmas millionaire raffle draw, which was held on New Year's Eve.
