Worker dies in freak accident at university
A UNIVERSITY worker died after a freak accident where he was struck by a 'cherry picker' machine involved in construction work.
He was named locally as Frank McGrath (58), who worked in the estates and maintenance section of University College Cork (UCC). He was from Cork city and friends were last night comforting his family.
Mr McGrath died at the scene after he suffered head injuries at site works on the campus on College Road shortly before 5pm. A full post-mortem examination will be carried out today.
Gardai will now carry out investigations for the coroner's office and the Health and Safety Authority. Construction work has been suspended.
Gardai said the incident was "a freak tragedy" while UCC said it was deeply shocked and saddened by the fatality.
