Women told 'stick with acne drug'

Ireland's drugs watchdog has said women should continue taking a medicine used to treat acne and also as a contraceptive, although it is under investigation.

France's health regulator has asked the European Medicines Agency to look into Dianette (Diane-35) after associating it with four deaths from thrombosis in the past 25 years. The Irish Medicines Board said there was no reason for any woman to stop taking the drug, but that if anyone had concerns they should discuss them with their family doctor.

A spokeswoman said the drug, which is made by Bayer, was suitable for the management of severe acne.
