Woman leaves hospital with suspected attacker

Liam Cosgrove

A WOMAN found naked and badly beaten in a field discharged herself from hospital yesterday and was collected by a close family member and the man suspected of carrying out the attack.

Gardai believe the 18-year- old woman could have sustained even more serious injuries if a passer-by had not interrupted the attack.

"This man saw her (the victim) being assaulted and alerted us," a garda source said last night. "We were alerted and a man was arrested at the scene."

Gardai ruled out any sexual motive for the assault -- and said it was not of a sexual nature.

It is not yet known why the woman was naked. However, officers believe a domestic incident may have spiralled out of control. It is believed the victim and her attacker are related.

The victim, who is traumatised by the ordeal, was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, before being transferred to Tullamore, Co Offaly, for treatment.

Detectives had been hoping to formally interview the young woman, but she discharged herself from hospital yesterday morning. It is understood the victim was collected from Tullamore General Hospital by a close family member and the man suspected of carrying out the attack.

The suspect, who is in his 30s, was arrested and questioned on Wednesday before later being released without charge.
