Woman killed in dune buggy accident

Tom Shiel

A YOUNG woman died in a hospital intensive care unit hours after being flung from a dune buggy on a scenic beach in north Mayo.

The victim was named locally last evening as Edel Doyle (25), formerly from Enaghbeg, Crossmolina, Co Mayo, but more recently living in the seaside village of Killala.

Ms Doyle had been a pillion passenger on the buggy, which was being driven by a 29-year-old male friend on Lacken Strand around 2.30pm yesterday, when the vehicle got into difficulties.

Both Ms Doyle and her companion were flung from the vehicle.

They were rushed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar, where Ms Doyle died in intensive care at around 8pm.

The driver of the buggy was said to be in a "serious but stable condition" in hospital yesterday.

Councillor Jarlath Munnelly, a Killala-based member of Mayo County Council, said Lacken Strand, which is famous for its annual horse races, was regarded as a very safe beach and that the accident was "totally against the character of the place".

The beach buggy involved has now been taken to Ballina Garda Station for a PSV investigation.

A post-mortem examination on the dead woman was being conducted at Mayo General Hospital yesterday afternoon.
