Woman killed in accident involving Luas

A woman pedestrian who was killed in an accident involving a Luas and a car in Dublin city centre this morning has been named as 35-year-old Yao Webster from Donabate, Dublin.

The tram, which was travelling on the Red Line towards Tallaght was in collision with a silver BMW car at the junction of Abbey Street and Jervis Street, and as the car was spun by the Luas it struck the woman who was walking at the junction.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

She is believed to be from another country but possibly married to an Irish person.

The incident happened at 8.45am.

After the crash the woman's body was covered by emergency crews from Dublin Fire Brigade and then cordoned off pending a preliminary inspection by a coroner.

Two units of Dublin Fire Brigade as well as two ambulances attended the scene.

The Luas rail system.

The driver of the car was not believed to have been hurt in the crash.

An examination of the scene has been carried out by forensic collision investigators and the street has since reopened to traffic.

The Luas line is closed between the Smithfield and Connolly stops.
