A young woman has died and another is seriously injured after apparently falling from a moving van in the early hours of the morning.

The women, both aged in their early 20s, were passengers in the vehicle as it was making its way past the Barna Road and Moycullen Road junction in Co Galway.

Gardai were called to the scene at around 2.20am on Sunday.

Emergency services found the two women lying seriously injured on the roadside.

Gardai confirmed to Independent.ie no vehicle of any kind remained at the scene after the incident.

The two women were given medical treatment at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Galway.

One of the women was later pronounced dead and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out.

The second woman remains seriously ill in hospital where her condition is described as stable.

It is believed the van they were travelling in was not involved in a collision.

No arrests have been made and gardai said their investigations into the "unusual" incident are ongoing.

They have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information, particularly anyone who was travelling in the area at the time, to get in contact.

The scene was sealed off for a full technical examination.
