Woman dies after being struck by car on city street

A WOMAN in her 50s has died after she and another pedestrian were struck by a car on a busy Dublin street.

Gardai are investigating the fatal road traffic collision on Abbey Street Upper, Dublin 1, close to the Jervis Luas stop, just before 1pm today.

The man and woman were taken to the Mater Hospital where the woman was later pronounced dead. The man suffered leg injuries.

The driver of the grey Hyundai, a man in his 30s, was arrested under the Road Traffic Act at the scene and was detained at Store Street Garda Station.

The area around the scene has been sealed off and is expected to be closed to traffic and the Luas for up to four hours to allow a forensic investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Store Street Garda station on 01 666 8000.
