A MOTHER and her three-year-old son were left fighting for their lives after a horror two-car collision in Co Laois.

The accident happened at around 8.30pm on the Portlaoise Road, about a mile outside Portarlington.

The woman had to be cut from the car by the emergency services and was rushed to hospital with the three year old. Both had suffered severe injuries and were in a critical condition.

A six year old boy who was also in the car and the driver of the second car received minor injuries.

Two HSE advance paramedics treated people at the scene and three ambulances then ferried them to Portlaoise and Tullamore hospitals.

It is understood the little boy and the woman are from the local area.

A garda spokesman said the road has been closed to facilitate a forensic examination.
