Woman and four firefighters hospitalised after blaze in flat
A woman in her 20s and four firefighters were hospitalised following a blaze at an apartment block in Waterford.
Waterford City fire station was alerted to the blaze at 11.05pm on Sunday and rescued one woman who was in a "serious condition".
Authorities said the fire on Wellington Street was "difficult" and four firefighters were hospitalised for smoke inhalation. Three were released overnight while a third was released yesterday morning.
The crews used breathing apparatus to enter the building and rescued the woman, who was brought to Waterford University Hospital. The fire was extinguished by 1.30am.
"The conditions... were difficult, it was an extremely hot fire," said chief fire officer Niall Curtin. Two fire units were dispatched and people were being evacuated when they arrived.
Councillor John Hearne commended the firefighters for their bravery, saying: "It's all young mothers and kids in that building."
