Woman (40) charged with murder of Wayne McQuillan

A WOMAN has been charged with the murder of a man who was fatally stabbed in Drogheda in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Paula Farrell (40) was remanded in custody after she was brought to court this evening charged with murdering Wayne McQuillan (30).

She was arrested after Mr McQuillan was found suffering from fatal injuries outside her home address in Rathmullen Park in the Co Louth town at 1.45am on Wednesday.

Judge Michael Walsh adjourned the case at Dublin District Court.

Ms Farrell of Rathmullen Park, Drogheda is charged with murdering Mr McQuillan on January 1.

The accused had been detained at Drogheda Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Garda Andrew Corbett told the court he formally arrested the defendant at Drogheda Garda Station, where she was charged today at 3.20pm.

She made no reply after caution and was handed a copy of the charge sheet.

There was no application for bail as this cannot be granted at District Court level. Defence Solicitor Patrick Goodwin said he was consenting to the defendant being remanded in custody to appear in Dundalk District Court on January 8.

He added that he had "concerns" about his client's health and asked Judge Walsh to direct appropriate medical treatment while she is in custody.

The judge agreed, and also granted free legal aid after a statement of the accused's financial means was handed in to court.

Ms Farrell, wearing a blue denim jacket, white and grey jumper and black trousers, did not address the court during the brief hearing.

Mr McQuillan was found in the front garden of the house, suffering from  number of stab wounds in the early hours of New Year's Day. Gardai had to take him to hospital themselves after an ambulance took almost 30 minutes to arrive. He was rushed in a patrol car to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead.

The garda investigation was upgraded to a murder inquiry when the results of a postmortem became known yesterday afternoon. A detailed forensic investigation has been conducted at the scene.

Mr McQuillan is survived by his father Jimmy, mother Bernie and sister Audrey.
