Gardai are investigating an incident in which a woman in her twenties was injured following a machete attack in Galway on Friday.

The incident occurred at 9.45pm following an incident of criminal damage to a vehicle involving a number of people on Main St, Eyrecourt.

The woman, who was an occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Portiuncula Hospital with non-life threatening injuries to her hand.

CCTV footage will be viewed as part of the investigation.

Gardaí have said that no arrests have been made and the investigations are ongoing.

Local Fianna Fail TD Anne Rabbitte earlier spoke to Galway Bay FM about the incident.

"The community felt so upset about it that they had to hold a public meeting because they lived in fear on that night... because they were afraid to walk down their street, they were told to stay inside doors, they didn't know what was going on," she said
