Winds of change at fire station

Treacy Hogan

A FIREFIGHTER who created the world's first zero-carbon fire station is saving Dublin's fire service €50,000 a year in energy bills.

A total of 40 micro wind turbines now produce all of Kilbarrack fire station's electricity

The entire plan was drawn up and overseen by Neil McCabe, who kept working his normal shift hours as a firefighter.

Fire tenders at Kilbarrack fire station now also use water collected through a rainwater harvesting system, reducing their water consumption by 14,000 litres a week.

Fireman David Walsh checked out some of the turbines as the project was featured at the launch of the creativity festival Innovation Dublin 2012.
