Wife of Putin's spokesman sparks outrage after performing Holocaust-themed dance on TV
The wife of Vladimir Putin's spokesman has sparked outrage by performing a Holocaust-themed ice skating routine on Russian TV last night.
Tatiana Navka, wife of Dmitry Peskov, appeared on Russian reality show Ice Age, performing in the same attire that Jewish people were forced to wear by the Nazis.
Tatiana and her ice skating partner, actor Andrei Burkovsky, smiled during their routine and appeared to be shooting each other in one sequence.
On her Instagram page, she said that the dance was designed to pay tribute to her favourite film, Life is Beautiful – a film about an Italian man who uses his imagination to distract his young son from the horrors of the concentration camp they are imprisoned in.
“Show this movie to your children. Our children need to know and remember that terrible time, which I hope, God willing, they will never know (again),” she wrote.
However, the performance instead resulted in a wave of criticism online, with many perceiving the routine as insensitive.
One user on Twitter wrote: “Tatyana Navka should be ordered by Putin to make a public apology. Have you also forgotten how your people suffered in WW2?
Another said: "The performance by Tatyana Navka & her partner is the most vulgar & repulsive garbage I've seen in a while.
The Jerusalem Post had also called the performance “chilling”, stating that the Jewish concentration camp ice skating rendition was not the first time Ice Age had featured performers dressed in Holocaust-themed decor in a reality show.
