"I was busy ironing at home in Athlone when the news came over the wireless. I remember I sat down to gather my thoughts.
"It was so appalling and so shocking that you couldn't concentrate on anything else.
"Some of the images of that moment and that day are still so vivid in my mind including that of his wife Jackie in her pink suit with the blood stains on it, it was awful. President Kennedy epitomised the best of our emigrants. In Athlone, as in the rest of the world, people just couldn't get their heads around it."
