Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a form of scan that is often used to diagnose health conditions that affect organs, tissue and bone.
The MRI scanner can produce a detailed image of the inside of the body. It can cost around €2m to buy the scanner and install it.
A private company pays the public hospital rent and hires staff such as radiographers. The public hospital pays them a fee for every scan on a public patient.
