'We're there to listen, not judge'

Gill Leo (47) works with an IT company in Waterford and volunteers with the Kilkenny branch of the Samaritans.

"We are all volunteers and we come in to cover weekly duties. I've been volunteering with my branch since 2005.

"I had done some volunteering before and I went to a talk that year and decided to help out at The Samaritans.

"It can be very tough work; you can hear the fear in the voices on the other end of the phone.

"That is very, very hard to listen to but you are always focused and engaged. We are there to listen and never bring our own judgment into it, but you do ask people about the options they do have, the positive options and you hope they take those.

"Sometimes we buy someone a few hours or a few minutes to make a different decision."
