CLONDALKIN could soon become one of the country's newest Gaeltacht regions under plans agreed by the Cabinet.
Areas, which are designated as official Irish-speaking regions and are entitled to state funding, will now be determined based on linguistic criteria instead of by geography.
This means areas around the country, even in Dublin, could apply for the first time to be Gaeltacht-designated.
Labour TD Robert Dowds is hopeful Clondalkin could become one of the country's new Gaeltacht regions.
"During the presidential election, Michael D Higgins stated that Clondalkin had a case to be recognised as a Gaeltacht area, due to the number of Irish speakers," he said.
