Weekend of fun and festivals

Thousands are expected to turn out for a host of fun-filled festivals this weekend.

In Duncannon, Co Wexford, volunteers hope to smash the world record for building the most sandcastles in one hour.

And the streets of the capital also promise to be busy as Dublin City Council hosts the second annual Latin American Festival this weekend and next.

Other events include include Cavan's Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, running today until next Sunday, while Carrick-on-Shannon will feature a County Sets Ceili and Two Hand Dance at its Traditional Culture Festival this weekend.

There will be more jigs and reels over at the Loinneog Lunasa music festival in Gweedore, Co Donegal, while Letterkenny Live will present two nights of free live gigs across the town. Conor Haughey, son of the late Taoiseach Charlie Haughey, is to follow in his father's footsteps and fire the starting pistol at the annual Dingle Regatta in Co Kerry this weekend.

Meanwhile, at Dun Laoghaire Harbour, south Dublin, a Gallic-themed nautical festival -- Festival des Bateaux -- is planned, with a French market and free live bands today and tomorrow.
