Wedding harmony for trad families

Tom Shiel

THEY met in the scorching heat of Dubai but were married yesterday in the much cooler surrounds of Co Donegal.

Well known trad musician Fergal O Murchu and air hostess turned primary school principal Amanda Davey said "I do" in St Agatha's Church, Clar, near Donegal town.

Mr O Murchu (33), from Moygownagh, Co Mayo, is the founder of Ragus, an Irish dance show formed 12 years ago. He met his bride to be while touring in Dubai. Mr O Murchu said: "I met Amanda when she came to one of our shows in Dubai. I suppose you could say I was smitten straight away."

Neither the bride, who is also an accomplished flute player, or groom had to perform at yesterday's ceremony which was performed by Fr Kieran Holmes, a first cousin of the groom.

Singer Tommy Fleming, a close friend of the groom, was due to perform at the ceremony but was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness.

After a short stay in Belfast, the couple intend going to Dubai, a place which has many happy memories for them, to continue their honeymoon.

At a reception afterwards, Amanda was persuaded to do some stepdancing while her sister, Shauna, played the harp and her brother, Nigel, played a tune on the accordion.
