Waterways to a new future planned
HUNDREDS of thousands of euro will be poured into studies for projects like a floating swimming pool as the Government attempts to breathe life into two of the country's most prominent canals.
The costs are revealed in a master plan for Dublin's Royal and Grand canals commissioned by the cross-border body along with Dublin City Council, Dublin Docklands and Failte Ireland.
The study carried out by consultant firm Scott Wilson cost €40,000 -- with Waterways Ireland paying half and the other three agencies shelling out for the remainder.
Key schemes include:
- Floating gardens on the Royal Canal near Sheriff Street and a public plaza and market area near Mountjoy prison;
- A floating stage for concerts at Grand Canal dock with either a floating ice rink or swimming pool;
- New berths for an Amsterdam-style houseboat community.
