ONE of the biggest water treatment plants in the State needs to be upgraded at a cost of €20m to prevent contamination of drinking water, writes Paul Melia.
Two other large plants also face an upgrade bringing the total cost to €50m, the Department of the Environment said last night.
Deadly bugs including e-coli and cryptosporidium could cause serious illness among 330,000 householders unless a 150-year old tunnel in Roundwood, Co Wicklow is replaced.
Another two large plants affecting 170,000 people -- at Staleen, Co Meath, and Lee Road in Cork city -- also need upgrading.
