THE communications watchdog has squashed a spurious 'missed call' mobile phone scam, which targeted tens of thousands of Irish customers by redirecting their call to premium sex lines overseas.

The scam began on Saturday and ran into Sunday morning when an international crime cartel rang Irish mobile phone numbers and hung up so quickly that the person couldn't answer the call in time.

The phone then registers a missed call from an unknown origin with a number starting with the prefix +386.

Many returned the call under the assumption it was an Irish 086 mobile number they were ringing back.
