Watch: Should Barack and Michelle Obama be given the Freedom of Dublin?

Barack and Michelle Obama have been are to be granted the Freedom of the City of Dublin.

The pair will be given the keys to the city following a proposal by Lord Mayor Brendan Carr, which was backed my a majority of Dublin city councillors.

"I believe Barack and Michelle Obama did set the right direction for the US both domestically and in international relations of seeking to build a cohesive and inclusive society which respects all is constituent communities," Mr Carr said.

However, the move proved divisive among counsellors, with several staging a walk out.

People-Before-Profit councillors John Lyons, Andrew Keegan, Tina MacVeigh and Hazel de Nortuin stood up and left the council chamber after the vote.

Independent.ie spoke to people on the streets of Dublin about whether they supported awarding the freedom of the capital to the former first couple.
