A new website with the lofty goals of acting as a gateway to "discovery" about Ireland while placing culture and creativity at the centre of public policy has been launched by the Taoiseach.

The ireland.ie portal is part of the Creative Ireland Programme, which is a legacy initiative running up to 2022 and understood to be very popular with Enda Kenny.

It was launched with a promotional video shown to senior business people attending a lunch in Washington on Wednesday.

"Ireland.ie is a gateway to discovery of who we are, what we believe and what we do," Mr Kenny told the event.

"Our culture speaks to the essence of who we are, a culture of storytelling and learning, of artistic endeavour, pride in heritage, and a never satisfied curiosity about the world around us.

"We are peacekeepers and peace-makers.  We believe in culture as a basis for personal and collective wellbeing.  We are now a global nation, ever alert to the challenges that confront us all.

"All of this marks out a distinct contribution we can make to the world."
