Colm Farrell (46), from Church View in Tuam, is facing a public order charge in Tuam District Court. However, he is on a trek through the 32 counties to raise suicide awareness.

The court was initially told that the case could proceed in the absence of the defendant. But after hearing some evidence Judge Geoffrey Browne halted proceedings.

Justice Browne adjourned the case until January 22.

Mr Farrell told the Irish Independent he was surprised by the move. "It was all just a mix up. I didn't know the case was being heard on that date. I contacted gardai immediately and made an agreement I would appear at the next sitting."
