Warning of cancelled surgery
SURGICAL operations, clinics and ward rounds will have to be cancelled during the week if hospital specialists are forced to work weekend rosters, according to a leading consultant. Sean Tierney, a vascular surgeon in Tallaght Hospital, Dublin, was speaking at the launch of the Irish Medical Organisation's (IMO) pre-budget submission.
Dr Trevor Duffy, chairman of the IMO's consultants' committee, said the union would be present at today's Labour Court talks, which are examining demands by the HSE to reduce doctors' rest days.
The Irish Hospital Consultants' Association (IHCA) has already said it will not attend. The HSE has said this leaves the association's members at risk of putting themselves outside the protection of the Croke Park agreement.
