A young female dog had to get its leg amputated after suffering “horrific abuse” for years.

The mix-breed dog called Laney was rescued in Tullamore by the Cara Rescue Dogs based in the midlands.

“We got a call about a dog near Tullamore that was hobbling on three legs and weak with hunger.

"The poor dog has clear signs of having ample amounts of litters of pups despite being clearly emaciated, every bone in her tiny body protruding,” a rescuer with the Cara Rescue Dogs told Independent.ie.

“Her back right leg was dangling lifeless and shrivelled up. The vets said it was not a recent injury and her leg had to be amputated.”

The rescue group said the three-year-old dog was neglected and abuse for a long time.

“It’s an awful case but sadly it’s not the worst case I’ve seen.”

Laney is due to have her stitches removed tomorrow and will hopefully be re-homed soon.

“She’s been through so much and at the moment we’re keeping a close eye on her. She needs to be neutered and vaccinated as well as put on more weight before we can re-home her.”
