INDEPENDENT TD Mick Wallace appears to have been confused by road signs when he drove the wrong way down a one-way street into a property he built yesterday.

The Dail representative drove the wrong way down the one-way Strand Street Great in Dublin before leaving his car in an underground car park.

The street runs alongside his 'Italian Quarter' development of apartments, restaurants and retail outlets. Mr Wallace emerged from the building again about an hour later in a BMW jeep, branded with the logo of his construction firm, and drove away.

Last month, ACC Bank appointed a receiver to take control of some of the most valuable assets owned by his firm M&J Wallace Ltd.

The company owes banks €42m. Nearly half of that is owed to ACC.
