Walkers warned of avalanche risk in hills
INEXPERIENCED hillwalkers are being told not to venture into the mountains because of dangerous conditions and the risk of avalanches caused by melting snow, writes Paul Melia.
Mountaineering Ireland yesterday warned anyone planning to climb in the coming days to be extremely cautious.
Chairman Ruairi O Conchuir said: "A number of experienced mountaineers, who are very well equipped, are enjoying the winter mountaineering conditions. However, others are out in conditions for which they are totally unprepared.
"People should avoid the uplands where ice, particularly in gullies and on approach tracks, poses a real danger."
