Video: Inside the garden shed observatory of history-making stargazer

The amateur astronomer who recently discovered a 'supernova' exploding star has explained the phenomenon from inside his garden shed observatory.

Dave Grennan (39) spotted the 290-million-year-old spectacle through his powerful telescope at his home in Raheny, north Dublin.

The discovery has been described as the biggest in amateur Irish astronomy by the chairman of Astronomy Ireland, David Moore.

Professor Stephen Smartt of Queen's University Belfast confirmed it as the first supernova to be discovered from Irish soil.
