Niall Doherty was a close childhood friend of a victim of the 2009 Air France tragedy.
Mr Doherty grew up in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, with Dr Aisling Butler (26), pictured, who died on Air France flight 447 in 2009.
Dr Butler's mother Evelyn told the Irish Independent it was "surreal" that Mr Doherty had died in such a similar manner to her daughter three years ago.
"There wasn't a bad bone in Niall's body. The Dohertys are very close to the Butlers," she said, adding that when Aisling died, Mr Doherty's mother Eileen and father Michael supported the family.
She said that at the time, Niall was very upset to hear what had happened to Aisling.
"All the kids went to national school together and Aisling was very good friends with Niall's sister Aideen," said Ms Butler.
She said she had spoken to Mr Doherty's family and they were beyond devastated about what had happened.
Dr Butler's plane went down en route to Paris from Rio de Janeiro after encountering stormy weather. She and two friends – Dr Jane Deasy (27), from Rathgar, Co Dublin, and Dr Eithne Walls (28), from Ballygowan, Co Down – died.
