RTE's 'News at One' host Sean O'Rourke and TV3 broadcaster Vincent Browne were among the high-profile mourners who attended a removal for Mr Barry, who died earlier this week.

Former Fianna Fail TDs Mary Hanafin and Conor Lenihan also attended the Mass in St Stephen's Church in Killiney Hill Road near Ballybrack in Dublin.

Mr Barry (63) was one of Ireland's outstanding journalists and was best known for his forensic interviewing skills.

Family friend and parish priest Fr Donal Neary spoke of how Mr Barry "brought integrity and he also brought humour, incisiveness and a keen and a bright mind".

His funeral will take place today after 11am Mass at St Stephen's Church, with burial in Shanganagh Cemetery.
