UTV's Julian back after bypass

UTV presenter Julian Simmons has described undergoing five hours of open-heart surgery as a "life-changing experience" that made him consider his mortality.

The continuity announcer recalled thinking about seeing his late mother Pearl "on the other side" if he didn't survive his recent quadruple bypass.

The presenter said he was initially "terrified" at the prospect of undergoing such a major operation.

The 55-year-old presenter will return to his job later this week after a break of almost four months.

Mr Simmons was at the Ulster Hospital in Belfast for almost two months, before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital for surgery.

"I was surprised at how easy it all was. All I can remember is being given a pancake, a cup of tea and two little tablets the night before, then I woke up and the operation was over.

"I gave myself a goal. I was determined to be up and about for Rihanna's concert, and I made it," he added.
