HIGH spending US sports fans provided a welcome boost to Ireland's tourism industry this autumn, new figures show.
There was a 1.6pc increase in tourists visiting Ireland between August and October compared to the same time last year, and most of these seem to have come for the high profile match in the Aviva stadium between Navy and Notre Dame.
An extra 43,700 visitors travelled here from North America over the three-month period – 15pc more than made the trip last year.
European visitors also increased by 3pc to 700,500 over the period, the new Central Statistics Office figures show.
The CSO figures also reveal a slight upsurge in Irish people travelling overseas with 5,514,700 trips made this year.
