FIREFIGHTERS were this evening battling to extinguish a blaze that broke out above a popular Dublin restaurant.

The fire appeared to have started in offices above Wong's Chinese restaurant, in Ranelagh village.

From just before 4pm today, eight units from Dublin Fire Brigade tried to put out the fire, which has caused significant damage.

The entire roof went up in flames while the blaze appeared to begin in rooms at the back of the top floor of the building before spreading to the front.

Road diversions have been put in place by gardai in the Sandford Road area.

The restaurant was due to open at 6pm and all the staff who were there preparing to open the premises escaped unharmed.

An ambulance was on standby but there were no injuries reported.

A number of buildings in the area were evacuated.
