A NO-NONSENSE food scientist has been appointed chairman of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.
Professor Mike Gibney from University College Dublin's Institute of Food and Health is taking up the non-executive position chairing the board, which has an important advisory role.
Prof Gibney previously worked in Trinity College Dublin as professor of nutrition and dean of research and has published widely on public health and molecular nutrition, and served on various top-level EU and United Nations committees on food and health.
He has courted controversy at times by rubbishing vague, unsubstantiated claims about food and has been particularly dismissive of suggestions that organic food is better for you than conventional produce.
