Typhoon charity appeal

IRISH charities are appealing for donations after one of the most powerful storms ever recorded reportedly killed at least 10,000 people in the Philippines.

Plan Ireland estimates around four million people have been affected by the super typhoon, 'Haiyan'.

Meanwhile, the Irish Red Cross has said that almost one million people have been temporarily sheltered in 353 evacuation centres after the typhoon.

And Irish development agency Trócaire has committed emergency support to its partners working in the Philippines.

Anyone wishing to donate to the Irish Red Cross can do so online at www.redcross.ie or by phone, at 1850 50 70 70.

GOAL has dispatched an emergency response team to the Philippine island of Leyte. The public can support GOAL's appeal by telephoning GOAL on 01 280 9779; visiting www.goal.ie; Donations to the children's charity, Plan Ireland, can be made online at www.plan.ie or by calling 1800 829 829.
