Gardai in Monaghan are investigating a two vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred this morning on the N2 between Carrickmacross and Castleblayney.

The accident happened at approximately 6am.

Both male drivers of the two trucks involved were fatally injured in the crash.

They were the sole occupants of each of the vehicles.

The two men died at the scene, with one body taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and the other remaining at the crash site for several hours.

The stretch of the N2 is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Investigators and local diversions are in place.

It is expected that the road will remain closed for the next number of hours.
