Two struck off medical register for misconduct

Kevin Keane

Two doctors who were found guilty of professional misconduct have been struck off the medical register.

The High Court has confirmed two decisions of the Medical Council to remove Dr Siad Zia (40) and Dr Chidozie Onovo (43) from the register of doctors in Ireland.

Dr Zia, a German citizen who had an address in Ballincollig, Co Cork, was found to have lied in a job application for a registrar position in Sligo General Hospital in September 2008.

He was suspended and under investigation by the UK's General Medical Council at the time.

Dr Onovo failed to disclose a criminal conviction for drug smuggling in job applications for positions he held as a senior house officer and a psychiatric registrar in hospitals in the Munster region between 2004 and 2008.

The Nigerian citizen was convicted in a UK court in 1998 of attempting to smuggle 4.5kg of cannabis in to Heathrow Airport and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Dr Onovo's criminal record only came to light through background immigration checks carried out by the New Zealand authorities.
