MORE than 100 people have lost their jobs after contracts between TV service provider Sky and two door-to-door sales companies were terminated.

Staff at Live Wire in Co Kildare and Premier Digital in Co Limerick were left reeling when they were made redundant without being given notice.

The companies had provided door-to-door sales of subscriptions to the British digital satellite TV service for over a decade.

One employee at Premier Digital, which sold subscriptions across the west of the country from its base in Castletroy, Co Limerick, said its 60 staff members learned of the decision yesterday morning.

It is believed that Live Wire, which is based in Co Kildare, also made at least 50 members of staff redundant as a result of the termination.

A spokesperson for BSkyB, which provides Sky TV in the UK and Ireland, said: "As part of an ongoing review of our operations in Ireland and following discussions with certain third-party authorised sales agents, Live Wire and Premier Digital have decided not to renew retail agency agreements with Sky."

Management at both door-to-door sales companies did not answer calls from the Irish Independent yesterday.
