The suspects were being detained for a third day at Monaghan Garda Station in relation to the raid in Cootehill, Co Cavan, last December.

A 41-year-old man was arrested in the Newbliss area of the county and a 42-year-old in the Dublin area.

They can both be detained for up to seven days under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The arrests, made on Monday morning, were part of an ongoing investigation by local detectives and the Organised Crime Unit.

The theft was carried out by a number of men who drove into the small town at around 5.20am on December 12 with a tractor, low-loader and digger.

Two ATM machines at branches of the Ulster Bank and Bank of Ireland, which are next to each other, were targeted and an undisclosed sum of money stolen.
