Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating how the youngster died after becoming trapped in a lift in a building in Galway

Two people were taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning after a fire at an apartment in Balbriggan in north county Dublin.

The alarm was raised at 1am when fire brigade controllers received a call that two adults and a child were trapped in the burning apartment at Landy’s Court on Mill Street in the town.

Fire units from Balbriggan, Swords and Skerries responded to the emergency along with two ambulances.

When they arrived there were two adults and one child in distress outside the building but one adult remained trapped inside and had to be rescued.

One adult was taken to Beaumont Hospital while a child was taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the domestic fire is being investigated but is believed to be accidental.
