Two pedestrians were hailed as heroes last night for bravely rescuing a man from the River Lee in Cork.

The duo, a cyclist and a man walking home, spotted an individual in difficulty in the water near Lavitt's Quay around 6pm.

They immediately alerted the emergency services but, afraid that the man might slip beneath the surface of water before they arrived, the duo descended the quay walls to assist him.
