TWO brave pensioner brothers have told of how they fought off would-be burglars with a brush at their home.

Farmers Jim and Eric Steele gave chase to the four-man gang which broke into their home in Manorcunningham, Co Don- egal. "They picked on the wrong boys," declared Eric at his home yesterday.

"They came here to pick on two old boys because they think we're done.

"We might not be well all the time but we're certainly not done. We're far from finished yet," added the 68-year-old, who is waiting on an operation.

The brothers said they were sitting in the living room of their tiny cottage on the town's Main Street when they spotted shadows in the kitchen.

"Jim grabbed the brush and took the shaft to them.

"He gave one of them a good bleaching (beating) and shouted to me to get the gun. They'd be a bit mad to tackle Jim. He might be 75 but he could still go a few rounds with Sonny Liston.

"They ran out of here like bats out of hell; good enough for them for trying to rob two old boys like us who've never done anyone any harm," said Eric.

Yesterday, gardai were studying CCTV footage from nearby business premises in an effort to identify the attackers. The attempted raid late on Monday night came as news emerged of yet more robberies in the north-west. In Sligo town, a 94-year-old and a 74-year-old were targeted by raiders. And a Chinese woman in her 60s who runs a takeaway in the town was robbed of her night's takings by two masked men, one armed with a baseball bat, when she arrived home at 1am on Sunday morning.

Two Samaritan workers in their 60s were robbed of a small sum of cash by an attacker armed with a screwdriver as they left the organisation's office in Sligo in the early hours of Saturday.
