Pat O'Haire (90), from Newport Road, Castlebar, Co Mayo, had left his car after it broke down on a busy road.

Initial reports indicated that the pensioner's car overheated and he was walking to a nearby house for assistance around 9.30pm on Wednesday night. The collision happened on the N5 at Islandeady between Castlebar and Westport.

Mr O'Haire was pronounced dead at the scene.

Separately, a man in his 30s died yesterday after he was struck by a truck while out jogging in Ballyvolane, Co Cork.

The man, who was an Irish Prison Service member, suffered multiple injuries in the collision with the lorry on the Ballyhooly Road.

Paramedics raced to the scene but the man died before he could be taken to hospital.
