Two held as gardai find 'bomb factory'

Gardai have arrested two men after uncovering a suspected home-made bomb factory in a residential housing estate.

Armed officers from the Garda Special Branch raided the house, which was alleged to have been used by members of the Continuity IRA.

They found component parts for the manufacture of pipe bombs during a search of the house in the Rosconnell estate in the Rickardstown area of Newbridge, Co Kildare.

Gardai also searched an adjoining garage but did not find any explosives. Other items were also taken away for forensic examination.

They swooped on the house on Thursday night.

Gardai arrested a 45-year-old man and a 39-year-old man.

Meanwhile, an Army ordnance unit was called out during Thursday night to a derelict house at Model Farm Road in Cork city after gardai found pipe-bomb component parts but no explosives.
